Gray Elementary and High School marker reads:
In 1932 James Russell Collins was named principal of the Gray School for blacks in Jones County. The establishment of this school afforded black students the opportunity to further their educational experience at the secondary level in a school in their home county. In the initial years of the secondary school program for blacks in Jones County, grades one through five met for classes at Mount Salem Baptist Church in Gray and grades six through nine met at Turner Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Gray. A building was erected on this site in the early 1930's and was named Gray Elementary and High School. Under the leadership of James Russell Collins the school curriculum expanded to include grades one through twelve. In 1952 the first twelfth grade graduating class of Jones County blacks received their high school diploma from Gray High School. The school closed its doors in 1955.
